If you, like millions of men, are living with incontinence there are things you can do to improve your symptoms and reduce incontinence problems. Certain lifestyle changes, devices, and medical interventions can help you feel more like yourself. Exploring solutions can help you feel more in control of your bladder and your life.
Adopt lifestyle changes
Incontinence can follow from or be worsened by a number of things including enlarged prostate, stress, obesity, diabetes, diet, and smoking. Lifestyle changes can improve your symptoms. Exercise regularly to lose weight and reduce stress. Quit smoking and avoids foods that irritate the bladder. These include citrus, caffeine, and spicy foods. Reduce alcohol intake. Visit your doctor at least annually to monitor the health of your prostate.
Monitor and adjust toileting habits
Track habits to identify patterns. Notice when and under what circumstances you have accidents. Are there times when you don’t have accidents? What strategies can you use from these times? Helpful ones include double-voiding. Empty your bladder, wait several minutes and then try to empty your bladder again. Staying hydrated is important but avoid overwhelming your bladder with too much liquid all at once. Tracking can help you learn the right amount for you.
Strengthen your pelvic floor
Kegel exercises can reduce incontinence problems by strengthening your pelvic floor. Not sure which muscle is involved? Try either of these tips – pretend you are trying not to pass gas and notice the muscles you squeeze. You’ll contract these same muscles to strengthen your pelvic floor. You can also try stopping your urine midstream to identify the muscle. Once you’ve got it, practice contracting the muscle 10 times up to three times each day.
