Temporary incontinence vs persistent incontinence
Urinary incontinence, or inability to control bladder function, is most commonly caused by prostate trouble, spinal injury or neurological disorders such as stroke or Parkinson’s disease. Depending on the cause the condition may be temporary, lasting only until resolved with treatment; or persistent, lasting indefinitely.
Incontinence is not easy to talk about, but it is important to discuss symptoms with your healthcare provider. Incontinence may signal an underlying health issue that should be addressed. Additionally, your doctor may be able to suggest treatment options that can resolve the problem. Temporary incontinence ends when the underlying problem – (e.g. prostate health, certain medications, urinary tract infection, or weight gain) is managed.
Also known as permanent incontinence, persistent incontinence is of lasting duration. It does not go away, even with treatment of related health conditions. This type of incontinence is common with trauma injuries and neurological disorders. Prostate health can also be a cause for persistent incontinence.
Regardless of the type of incontinence there are some strategies you can use to feel more comfortable and independent.
Avoid foods that irritate the bladder – citrus, alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine are bladder irritants. They can aggravate incontinence and increase the volume of urine so reduce or eliminate them when possible.
Practice Kegels – these exercises strengthen the pelvic floor for better bladder control. To do Kegels start by isolating the muscles involved. You can choose to stop your urine midstream or tighten the muscles that keep you from passing gas. It is not advised that you stop your urine midstream after you have identified the muscle, as doing so has been linked to greater risk of urinary tract infection. After you have identified the muscle, practice contracting it for 10 reps. Do Kegels anywhere, anytime; up to three sets per day. No one will know what you are doing, so you can improve bladder function discreetly.
