Male Stress Incontinence

Stress incontinence occurs when the bladder leaks during physical activity or exertion. When the muscles that control your urine flow aren’t working properly, activities like heavy lifting, running, or even coughing, sneezing, or laughing can cause stress incontinence.

Normally, urine flows from the bladder to the urethra, to outside of the body. There is a muscle around the opening of the bladder called the sphincter, which squeezes to prevent urine from leaking through the urethra. If these muscles become weak, when pressure or “stress” is placed upon your bladder urine can easily leak out.

Causes and Symptoms of Stress Incontinence

The most common causes of male stress incontinence are complications due to prostate surgery or an enlarged prostate. Obesity, diabetes, or some medication side effects are also causes of stress incontinence.

The most prominent symptom is a loss of bladder control during physical activity. However, the symptoms will vary from person to person. You may not experience bladder leakage while participating in an activity one day, but the next day you do. Regardless, any pressure-increasing activity has the possibility of making you more vulnerable to stress incontinence, especially when your bladder is full.

Stress Incontinence Treatments

Because stress incontinence can be a form of temporary incontinence, your doctor may prescribe some different types of behavioral therapies to lessen the number of episodes you experience. Pelvic floor muscle exercises, or Kegel exercises, are a way to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and urinary sphincter. Your doctor may also recommend certain healthy lifestyle changes, like losing weight or quitting smoking to help improve your symptoms. You can also time the amount of fluids you drink throughout the day and plan scheduled trips to the restroom to help reduce the leakage you may experience.
